Amos continues recording the word of the LORD concerning the coming judgment of Israel’s sins. The verses in our lesson focuses on the sins of idolatry and injustice toward the poor and helpless. The LORD ends the prophesy with the promises of blessings in the future kingdom of the LORD when the Jews will be permanently returned to the land that God gave to them where they will experience abundant prosperity.
Amos was called by the LORD to be a prophet, despite his lack of a prophetic lineage, with a message for Israel (Amos 7:14-15). Israel was far from the LORD and the message Amos was given to deliver was one of repentance and judgment. The LORD spelled out the sins of Israel and the declared the judgment that was coming as a result of their lack of repentance. Israel was conquered by Assyria some 30-40 years later.
Amaziah was a king with a lot of promise. He started out doing what was right in the sight of God but eventually became proud and lost his way. He made the foolish and critical mistake of forsaking the LORD and following the gods that he had taken from a defeated enemy. He apparently did not consider how powerless these gods were since they could not protect their previous owners.
